Opposition leaders call for scrutiny of Bill.
The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, which criminalises divorce by instant triple talaq by Muslim men and attracts a jail term of three years for the husband.
A majority of 303 members voted for the Bill following a fractious debate, which saw a walkout by a constituent of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, the Janata Dal (United). The legislation was earlier introduced for the first time in the 17th Lok Sabha.
Tabling the Bill, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “Law is not about religion or garnering votes, it is for women’s empowerment.’’
