NEW DELHI: After battling for her life for over two weeks, 19-year-old Dalit woman Asha on Tuesday morning succumbed to her gang-rape injuries and breathed her last at the Safdarjung Hospital here, following which protests erupted in the Capital over Uttar Pradesh’s ‘Nirbhaya’.
If the brutality of the crime itself was not enough, what paints a far uglier picture are the events immediately after the incident. While Asha’s family had immediately rushed her to the nearest police station to register a complaint, the police at Chandpa police station first dismissed her injuries and then eventually registered an attempt to murder case, according to what her family told the media.
The problem was that Asha’s assaulters were four “upper caste” men in a village dominated by upper-caste families and only a handful of Dalit families.
