Farmers Reject Conditional Talks, Threaten To Block Delhi's Borders

NEW DELHI/GURUGRAM: More than 32 farmers’ associations and unions, representing tens of thousands of farmers protesting the Centre’s recently enacted farm laws, on Sunday evening unanimously rejected the Ministry of Home Affairs’ condition to move the agitation to the Nirankari Ground in Burari and said in a press conference that they would ask the farmers to sit where they are and block up to 5 entry and exit points of the Capital.

And amid this threat of stopping the supply of essential services to the Capital, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar were reported to have gathered for an emergency meeting at BJP National President JP Nadda’s home to discuss the deadlock over the farmers’ demands late on Sunday night.

Under the banner of the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), the farmers who are currently blocking the DelhiHaryana border at Singhu and Tikri said the Centre’s condition to move the protest to Burari was a ploy to illegally confine the protesters in Delhi.

“We will never go to Burari park. We have come to know that it is not a park but an open jail,” Surjeet Singh, state president of Bharatiya Kisan Union Krantikari said, adding that the farmers will not let any political party hijack their platform.

Singh said, “We’ve decided that we will not allow any political party leader to speak on our stage, be it from the Congress, BJP or the AAP. Our Committee will allow other organisations, supporting our cause to speak provided they follow our rules.”
