Leo Varadkar has given the green light for kids to go back to school in August.
The Taoiseach said it would be on a phased basis, with pupils possibly coming in for alternate mornings and afternoons.
He added: “As soon as possible we’ ll have everyone back in the class.”
Mr. Varadkar also confirmed the country is on track to move to Phase Two of the roadmap out of lockdown on Monday week.
Speaking after the weekly Cabinet meeting outside Government Buildings he said: “Provided the virus does not make a comeback between now and then, primary and secondary schools will reopen at the end of August.
“It may not be possible for every student to return for the full day, every day, but that is the point we are trying to get to.
“So it may be necessary to phase in the reopening of schools, but our objective is to open them as fully, and as soon as possible provided the virus does not make a comeback.”
Phase Two of the roadmap out of lockdown is on schedule to kick off on June 8.
