Ireland baked on the hottest day of the year yesterday as temperatures soared to 26C.

Parts of the country were hotter than Greece and Spain – as Met Eireann predicted the glorious weather will last over the Bank Holiday weekend and into next week.

The highest temperature was recorded at Mount Dillon in Co Roscommon which hit a sweltering 26.8C.

Little Isabella Kir wan splashed her way through the day in the water at Dollymount Strand in Dublin while Buster the dog cooled off with an ice cream in Westport, Co Mayo.

It’s bad news for farmers but good news for the rest of us as little or no rain is forecast from now until the end of next week.

Over the weekend the mercury is set to rise into the mid-20s with off-shore breezes making eastern and southern parts of the country just that little bit cooler.

Met Eireann said we can expect temperatures today and tomorrow to hit up to 25C. Sunday is set to be sunny in most areas with some clouds developing in the evening but again the weather will be piping hot.
