DERRY Girls fans can have “some wee peace of mind” as a third series of the hit comedy has been given the green light.

Set in the early 1990s, the show follows four schoolgirls and one bewildered English lad as they navigate their teen years.

The third instalment of Lisa McGee’s critically-acclaimed sitcom was due to start filming in April but was put on hiatus because of coronavirus.

But Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, who plays fiesty Michelle Mallon, said cast and crew have been told a new start date has been provisionally agreed.

However, the principal characters have been kept in the dark about the exact details.

She told the Irish Mirror: “There is a date pencilled in which is really good.

“It kind of went from being cancelled to ‘It might happen’ to now a date is in the diary, which is great.

“We are all sitting tight to hear what they are going to come up with and we are in a WhatsApp group and keep in touch regularly.

“We see each other a lot in between filming and always stay in touch and we are genuinely friends. So it is lovely to get to work with your mates.

“We started the Derry Girls journey together and it got really big together so we will always have that bond and friendship.

“So that’s why it is lovely to find out that we will get the chance to work together on that show again.”

Jamie-Lee added they are always kept in the dark to prevent them revealing any key plot secrets.

She said: “They haven’t told us anything though. Like is Nadine Coyle part of series three? I have no idea.

“They would never tell us anything and honestly we are deliberately the last to know because they know we can’t keep secrets.
