India announces coronavirus vaccine, sets Aug.15 release

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has assigned 12 institutes across the country to “expedite without fail” clinical trials of a vaccine against coronavirus (COVID-19), which it hopes to release on Independence Day, Aug.15.

The first made-in-India vaccine, named Covaxin, was developed in partnership with Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) of Hyderabad.

ICMR has told the institutes that this is a “priority project” being monitored at the topmost level of the government.
