A hospital consultant is the first NHS medic on the coronavirus frontline to die after contracting the illness.

Ear, nose and throat specialist Amged El-Hawrani, 55, died at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

His 18-year-old son Ashraf said in a statement: “He taught me the significance of respect and equality.

“He also stressed the importance of not worrying about the things I cannot control, which he displayed to me right up until the end of his life.”

A total of 1,228 patients have now died after testing positive for coronavirus, the Department of Health said yesterday – up 209 from Saturday.
