OLYMPIC chiefs finally caved in to worldwide pressure yesterday and pushed the Tokyo Games back to 2021.
The long overdue decision was greeted with relief in the wake of the coronovirus pandemic that is gripping the world.
The Games were scheduled to begin on July 24, but will now take place no later than summer 2021 according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The event will still be called Tokyo 2020 despite taking place next year.
It will cost organisers billions, but the decision was widely supported by leading athletes.
Two-time Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee said: “Evidently it was a very tough decision for the IOC, but in my opinion it is the right one.
