ARBROATH chairman Mike Caird insists caution must come before cash when it comes to the Championship.

Scotland’s second-tier clubs will meet in the virtual sense today to look at possible ways of how they can get the 2020-21 season started.

Caird says his club are geared up to get going in August after gaffer Dick Campbell led them to a sensational fifth-placed finish on their return to the second tier following a 17-year absence.

But certainty over whether they will be able to remains in short supply.

Various proposals have been put forward by clubs and officials, across all four senior divisions, for a restart – some more plausible than others.

And there is also the concern that relegation-bound Hearts could be in real trouble if the second tier has to restart behind closed doors.

Although some clubs and officials are sceptical and believe fears over the Jambos’ future is being used as a tool to scare the Premiership into Ann Budge’s last-ditch plan for reconstruction.

The problem is no one can state with any confidence when football can return and in what form.

There has been talk of starting the season behind closed doors, playing in centralised hubs and even suggestions the two lower leagues could be mothballed until next year if there is no significant improvement in the coronavirus crisis.
