The silence was deafening, the chinking glasses, clashing cutlery, slamming cash registers, pumping music and the laughter all gone from our towns and cities on the first weekend of lockdown.
But while tumbleweed may have been blowing through our streets, nothing could stop this nation of fun lovers partying indoors – if apart.
Friends and family gathered online, using video conference calls, and our new best friends, the Zoom and
House Party apps, which beam people into each other’s homes to socialise.
And Saturday night was definitely all right for a band of celebrities determined to mark wine o’clock in their best party gear.
Clutching a bottle of fizz, Amanda Holden squeezed into a golden mini dress and stilettos and partied in her living room on a “Girls night in”, using a Zoom video call, with her pals, chef Lisa Faulkner, 48, and actresses Angela Griffin, 43, and Sarah Parish, 51.
Amanda, 49, posted: “#cocktails with the #girls tonight #zoom in. No need to drop standards! #wecandothis #socialdistancing.”
She added: “My girls. What a lovely night. I appreciate them even more than I did before. To be honest... I appreciate so much more than I did before... #wecandoit.”
Actress-turned-chef Lisa added: “Oh how lovely to have a Friday night glass of wine with the girls!!! you are a tonic.”
