Angry Leicester residents called their city a “ticking time bomb” after claiming the spike in coronavirus was triggered by crowds who abandoned social distancing.
They poured out their frustration after being forced back into lockdown. Ministers ordered the closure of non-essential shops and schools and banned unnecessary travel after the city’s infection rates dwarfed those elsewhere.
Leicester accounted for six per cent of all new UK cases in the fortnight to June 23, with the number of hospital admissions up to 10 times the national average.
