The UK had an estimated 66,796,807 people at the end of June 2019.
The population growth rate over the 12 months to that point was 0.5 per cent, the slowest since mid-2004.
And the number of people aged 70 or over jumped 25 per cent to nine million, the Office for National Statistics said.
An estimated 12.4 million people – 18.5 per cent of the population – were aged 65 and over while 2.5 per cent were 85 or older.
Louise Ansari, of the Centre for Ageing Better, said: “Birth rates are falling while more of us can expect to live for many years longer than our parents or grandparents.
