Children need to be exposed to nature, to walk on a variety of surfaces like sand and grass, to touch a variety of surfaces like soil, leaves, and rocks. They need to be within that unsanitized environment.
I find many parents are reluctant to let their children do this. But it helps to build immunity. It helps them to understand that we are all part of nature.
Even if they are growing up in cities, they are not far from nature. Cities are not just about people or about buildings. They are also home to many other creatures. For example, Delhi has at least 300 different species. In Kolkata, you can find dolphins in the Hooghly. Leopards stray into the areas around the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai. They have all adapted to live here. For example, the dolphins in the Hooghly are blind because there is so much silt in the river that they cannot see. So, instead of vision, they use advanced echolocation and hearing to navigate. Conservation is about knowing our place in the world with all its biodiversity.
Environmental education should not just be about books and classes. Children need to be taken outdoors where they can find a hundred things to observe about nature. I started observing nature as a child. There used to be a big nest of a white-backed vulture near my school in Delhi. I was fascinated by the birds. I was a small girl and these big birds appeared like mythical creatures to me. But one day they were suddenly gone. Many such creatures have vanished from nature, from our lives.
