STONINGTON—Andy Gove thought his 90th birthday on Saturday, May 9, would be a low-key affair because of Maine’s social-distancing rules. His daughter promised him a special dessert, and his grandson said he’d come by to fix his sink, despite the snowstorm brewing.
Instead, his friends and relatives threw him a surprise party on wheels, complete with balloons and sirens, party hats and handmade signs. The wind gusted and the snow fell as Andy watched dozens of cars and trucks parade past his house. Well-wishers shouted and waved as they drove by.
“I’m so happy so many people are here,” said great-granddaughter Caitlyn Smith as she watched people drive onto Hagen Dock, where the parade started.
