DEER ISLE—Down Fire Roads 501 then 506, just off Sunshine Road, Evergreen Garden Club members spent Memorial Day the way they always spend Mondays in the warm weather: cleaning up Mariners Memorial Park.
On a weekend when most island Memorial Day activities were canceled, a half-dozen club members managed to prune trees and clear dead underbrush while keeping a safe social distance from each other.
On Monday, Phelps Brown, co-chair of the Mariners Memorial Park project, climbed a ladder and pruned an old apple tree to prolong its life.
