Crumbling causeway stokes fears of trouble ahead
The shoulder of the Deer Isle causeway is eroding three years after the state Department of Transportation repaired the road.

DEER ISLE—The rocks, seaweed and driftwood littering the sides of the Deer Isle causeway have town officials worried that someday soon the road will only carry one-way traffic.

The roadbed has deteriorated since 2017, when the state Department of Transportation added guardrails and replaced boulders with riprap along both sides of the causeway.
