Check it out from a distance and you'd agree with those who call it a Baby Velar. The Evoque’s a stunner, even a style statement, both on and off the road. Let it cruise on a highway and it munches miles without any fuss. Take it off the road, and this entry-level SUV comes into its own, revelling in higher revs to show off its handling capabilities. It’s agile, easy to handle and sure-footed as hell, like everything else from JLR.
Given that THE MAN always drooling over the best built just for the outdoor adventurer, we took the D180 diesel Evoque for a more than-ordinary spin almost 600km away from Delhi, to the desert dunes between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, recently. Sure it is no souped-up desert rig, but the temptation to test the Evoque’s much-hyped off-road capabilities were something we couldn’t let go.
Our destination: the Manvar Desert Camp and Resort, a hidden gem of 10 luxury and 20 standard tents spread over 100 acres, designed and built in the style of a village settlement against the backdrop of the Thar Desert. The brainchild of hotelier Moti Singh, a history graduate from Delhi's St Stephen’s College and Mayo College, Ajmer, the well-equipped camp is his version of glamping — letting his guests draw close to nature while remaining connected to the best urban experiences.
