Signing up for an event can be quite daunting for beginners, but there’s plenty you can do to settle your nerves and make sure you’re ready for the big day.

Last month, we looked at some of the questions and anxieties that some people have when considering participating in a triathlon for the first time. We hope that you now see your first triathlon as a journey to be enjoyed, rather than an ordeal. Instead of leaving it too late or joining the thousands of ‘new year resolution’ athletes, why not start your new triathlon experience today? This period before the end of year celebrations and parties is ideal to focus on the technical aspects of each of the disciplines. Often people coming into triathlon already participate or compete in one sport, so think about using this time to improve the technique in the others. This aspect is often overlooked and it is a very important part of any sport, as it will make you more efficient, faster, make the training more enjoyable and, most importantly, help prevent injury. Injuries can occur when poor form, lack of fitness or fatigue results in a joint, muscle or tendon not working correctly, and as a result can cause problems. It is much easier to learn correct technique from the start, rather than change something that has been ingrained over many years.  

How do I get going?

You can, and many people do, train on their own devising their own training plans. This can be successful, especially for the more experienced athlete. However, I would encourage new triathletes to join a local club, even if you can only get to it once a week or fortnight. The help, experience, encouragement and tips you will pick up will be invaluable. It is always much nicer to train with others and meet new friends.
