From Judge Colin Clark…

Poultry Section

Colin Clark, Chris Parker & Christopher Bennett
Royal Cheshire Show

750 Birds Entered

Much has been written on the rapid expansion and achievements secured at this show, and mostly due to the efforts of organiser John Tickle; its more recent accolade was securing the status of Royal Championship Show. Having officiated as judge at virtually all of the Agricultural and County shows in the country, the invitation to add this one to my ticks was accepted and looked forward to.

On the hottest day of the year since 1976, we arrived to be greeted by a team of suitably attired gents in blue blazers, and were soon briefed as to our classes and requirements. Co judges for the day consisted of Hugh Guthrie, Brian Anderton, Joe Singer, Geoff Parker, Chris Parker, Jim Benson, Leon Smith and yours truly. Championship judge was the ‘bow-tie bedecked’ (and very loud) Ian Allonby.

The tent size was impressive, with adjacent rooms for the egg show and photograph section etc. The array of trophies is probably the largest I have encountered for being awarded on the day and numbered, all polished up ready for a year’s holiday with their new proud winners.

What is Rare?

It would be accurate to say that many breeders and fanciers are currently concerned about their particular breed in terms of how it is regarded officially, and some may be unaware of who is looking after their interests as far as protection measures go in the face of any government-imposed cull.
