When Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly and Leigh Ord started collecting beautiful second-hand clothes and accessories, they couldn’t have imagined their feel-good fashion project would make such an impact. Through Vintage with Love, clothes, shoes and accessories in excellent condition are donated, sorted, and sold at an annual sale either in Cape Town or Joburg. There, you’ll find colourful blouses and pleated skirts, as well as expertly crafted vintage shoes, and all the proceeds are donated to charity. Launched in 2013, the project has raised over R6 million to date for NPOs and charities like The Click Foundation and The Link, which work to improve childhood literacy and numeracy skills. In 2015, Debbie Smuts came on board to manage the day-to-day operations. Debbie says...
As a former teacher, I really resonated with what Jacquie and Leigh were trying to do. I believe all children should have access to education, so I couldn’t wait to get involved in the project. They held the first two annual sales in Joburg, and asked me to handle the next sale in Cape Town. We made about R600 000 in just two days! I’ve since taken on more responsibility and now oversee almost all operations in both cities.
