This should feel quite natural and the straps will help to keep your hand in place. With each step forward, push off from behind with your pole with alternate arms to power yourself along. Look ahead for pole placements as you walk, to avoid catching the tips between rocks, wooden slats or paving slabs.4 UphillTo keep the optimum 90&deg; angle at the elbow, you need to shorten your poles for steeper uphill sections. It&rsquo;s not an exact science, as terrain changes constantly, so aim for comfort over fiddling around endlessly with a protractor. Some poles feature on-the-fly adjustments at the touch of a button, which can come in very handy when you&rsquo;re dealing with constantly changing slopes.5 DownhillLikewise, lengthen your poles for downhill sections. On steep, rocky descents you can plant both poles ahead of tricky drop-offs and walk or jump through them. If you can make a pole adjustment on the fly, you can also extend the poles while standing at the edge of a high rock so you can reach the ground more easily and balance between the sticks as you pick your way down the mountain.6 Cross safelyUse one or two poles to aid balance during river crossings, planting them carefully upstream or making a solid triangle shape with a single pole and your legs as you go. NB: The power of flowing water should never be underestimated. Never cross deep, wide, fast-flowing rivers unless you and the group are very experienced. Always make these river crossings are a last resort unless confident of the party&rsquo;s skills. First, look upstream for easier crossing points and, if in doubt, walking a few miles to a bridge could save a life.
