Amit Dhirwani of bright performance nutrition, India’s leading importer of sports nutrition products and performance supplements, introduces Tina Thakrar to the muscle building world
What does it take for a bodybuilder to build muscle? We’d say a mix of discipline, hard work, and willpower. Amit Dhirwani has taken this same formula and applied it to build his company Bright Performance Nutrition (BPN) into a multi-crore business of importing performance and sports nutrition supplements in India.
Formerly called Bright Commodities, BPN is fairly new, but has had the benefit of Amit’s knack for business. Born and raised in a joint family in Mumbai, with a couple of years spent boarding at The Bishop’s School in Pune, Amit loved playing sports and reading as a kid. After a few carefree years at college in Mumbai, he was whisked into the family business of exporting textiles, where he spent a satisfying 22 years expanding into new markets like South East Asia and the Middle East.
“My father, Ram Dhirwani, was born in Karachi but had to move to India with my grandparents during the partition and build a life from scratch. He has been my chief mentor, who always taught me the immense importance of building long-lasting relationships and goodwill based on ethics. His ability to nurture partnerships stretching over 70 years amazes me and is definitely one of my biggest learnings,” says Amit, reminiscing about the time he spent working with his family. Even today, Amit, his brother, and their families live together with their parents as a joint household.
Diving into in-depth research is one of Amit’s greatest strengths; one that came in handy when he identified sports nutrition as an industry just waiting for a boom. “It was actually a string of decisions that led to the incorporation of BPN. We wanted to be the most sought after nutrition company in this space.”
