Banish Illnesses While On Vacation
The Malaysian Women\'s Weekly|November 2016

Why let a cold or a stomach bug ruin your next holiday? Find out how you can stay well when travelling.

Banish Illnesses While On Vacation

Statistics show that one in two among us is likely to get sick when overseas. Most issues are minor, but infectious diseases like malaria and the recent Zika virus outbreak can pose risks.

Before you fly, visit your doctor six weeks ahead of your departure date to get vaccinated. You can also reduce your risk of travel-related illnesses – read on to find out how.

DO NOT CATCH A COLD

Use a hand sanitiser often, even mid-flight. Cold-causing bacteria can get transferred from surfaces to your eyes and nose via your hands. This is to blame for 80 percent of illness caught on board. Germs can survive for up to seven days on seatback pockets and armrests.

Take elderberry supplements. They are known to lower your risk of catching a cold on the plane as elderberry extract has anti-microbial properties that can fight cold-causing viruses.

Use a saline nasal spray mid-flight. It keeps your nasal mucus thin during the flight. Thicker mucus tends to trap any viruses that you inhale, making it more likely to trigger a cold.
