10 Tips To Stay Well When You Travel
The Malaysian Women\'s Weekly|December 2017

Insomnia, a dodgy tummy or even the common cold can all put a dampener on your holiday, so what’s the best way to stay fighting fit on vacation?

10 Tips To Stay Well When You Travel

1 SEE SOMETHING AMAZING

Enjoying an incredible view or an inspiring piece of art creates a sense of awe in your brain and that lowers levels of inflammatory chemicals in your body. This is great for your health because these inflammatory chemicals raise the risk of joint pain, allergies and symptoms of colds and flu.

So now we know that, “looking at something lovely” is a prescription for a better health!

2 WATCH OUT FOR AIRPLANE MUNCHIES

The background hum of plane engines reduces how well you taste sweet and salty foods, making overindulgence likely. That’s bad news as salt can increase the dehydration that occurs on planes, while sugar suppresses immunity.

“Resist temptation by carrying healthier options,” says naturopath Dannielle Archer. “Unsalted nuts are a great choice – especially peanuts, cashew nuts and Brazil nuts which have stronger tastes. They’re a good choice when flying.”

3 BRING YOUR OWN PILLOW

Many of us find it hard to sleep the first night in a strange room. Sleep experts recently suggested this might be because part of your brain remains alert in a strange environment. “Taking your own pillow might help as it creates a sense of familiarity,” says Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, who talks about the effect in his new book The Doctor.
