“Well, I was born on The Grateful Dead tour”

THE OLD ADAGE “You are a product of your environment” may be a bit cliché, but in the case of Aspen Weaver, it couldn’t be more applicable. He is son of travelling “Dead Heads” and he has the spirit of the desert southwest in his veins. Aspen grew up riding in New Mexico, and area that could also be classified as a snowboarding desert a region that until recent years was devoid of any snowboarding culture whatsoever.

With his infectiously positive attitude and ability to adapt, Aspen was set on a path to become one of the more promising up-and-coming freestyle/free ride talents in the game. After having spent time in the Tahoe and Alaska back country, Aspen showed up to Superpark 20 last season and was blasting the iconic hip that has played host to so many legendary sessions, turning the heads of snowboarding’s who’s who.

Having spent last season filming for Von Zipper's Wildlife Lodge series, Aspen has ambitious plans to document his snowboarding exploits this year and hopes it can inspire the next generation of snowboarders. If you want to see some of Aspen's riding, be sure to check out his full part, edited by Von Zipper on snowboarder.com.

So Aspen, tell me about yourself. Where did you grow up?

Well, I was born on The Grateful Dead tour, so we followed Jerry [Gracia] around for the first couple years of my life. In 1995 when he died, no one really knew where to go. My parents went to Evergreen, Colorado, then Olympia, Washington and eventually ended up in New Mexico somehow. Then from two-and-a-half until I was 13, I grew up there. Then at 14 I went to boarding school in Utah. But New Mexico is my home. That’s where everything started and that’s where I learned how to be a man.
