Resolution Meets Speed
Smart Photography|April 2018

Sony is ready with its latest line-up and the new Alpha series cameras pack lot of punch. The critical shortage of battery life has been solved and the new cameras are filled with features appealing to both still and video enthusiasts. The Alphs 7R-series is Sony’s high-resolution models in full frame and the 7R III promises an improved experience.

Resolution Meets Speed

Design and Build Quality

The Sony Alpha 7R III has a rugged construction with a body reinforced by magnesium alloy top and front covers in addition to the internal frame. The camera is sealed to keep out dust and moisture. The camera has two command dials. The mode dial has a lock that prevents accidental rotation. An exposure compensation dial on the top panel ensures that you don’t need to fumble through the menu if you need a quick change of compensation. The back panel features the tiltable LCD screen, a joystick and a multi-controller.

Key Features

The Sony Alpha 7R III uses a 42.4 megapixel, 35mm full frame (35.9 x 24.0 mm) Exmor R CMOS sensor. The camera accepts all E-mount lenses. The sensor unit uses a charge protection coating on the optical filter, along with image sensor shift mechanism to keep dust away. The Alpha 7R III features sensor-shift 5-axis image stabilisation, and Sony claims a 5.5-stop shutter speed advantage while using it.

The camera uses a fast hybrid autofocus system that combines phase-detection and contrast-detection methods. The system uses 399 phase-detection points along with 425 contrast-detection points. The device can focus at light levels of -3 to 20 EV (ISO100 equivalent with f/2.0 lens). Focus modes available are AF-A (Automatic AF), AF-S (Single-shot AF), AF-C (Continuous AF), DMF (Direct Manual Focus) and Manual Focus. The camera provides focus area options of Wide, Zone, Centre, Flexible Spot (S/M/L), Expanded Flexible Spot and Lock-on AF.
