Canon EOS M series has been in the market for quite some time, but the lack of lens options has been a concern. The EF-M 11-22mm IS STM lens provides a much needed capability to the system, vis-a-vis wide-angle capability. Hopefully, the new lens will make the system more attractive to potential customers.
Design and Build Quality
Canon’s EF-M lenses are constructed predominantly with engineering plastic. The EF-M 11-22mm lens is quite light and balances well with the compact EF-M bodies. The lens has a retraction mechanism, similar to most EF-M lenses. This shortens the length of the lens for better portability. It has a metal mount. The 11-22 mm has a maximum diameter of 60.9mm and maximum length of 58.2 mm. It weighs 220 g.
The EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens is made for mirrorless EOS M bodies and offers a 35mm-equivalent focal length of approximately 1735mm. The lens features optical image stabilisation that is said to offer a three-stop advantage. According to Canon, the 11-22mm has the shortest focussing distance in its class at 0.15 m.
The lens is constructed with 12 elements in 9 groups including one UD and two aspherical elements. The special elements help improve image quality across the frame. This STM-designated lens incorporates a lead-screw type stepper motor for faster and quieter auto focus. This has a rear focussing system and offers full-time manual foc
