Our Editor & CEO, Hoshang Billimoria had the opportunity to meet several senior managers in Fujifilm during the product launch in Tokyo on 7th and 8th September, 2017. Meetings were with Mr. Toshihisa Iida, General Manager, Mr. Shinichiro ‘Shin’ Udono, Senior Manager and Mr. Tomohide Yazawa, Manager of the Optical Device & Electronic Imaging Products Division. How did the name of the firm originate?
The company derived its name from Mount Fuji. The factory of the company is located quite close to Mount Fuji and hence the name. Initially, the name was Fuji Photofilm but after the film market collapsed, the word ‘Photo’ was dropped and it became Fujifilm. One must remember that Fuji still makes medical films on a big scale and therefore the name is still apt.
Market share worldwide?
When digital cameras came in, Fujifilm was quick to introduce products in the compact digital camera market. The compact digital camera market reached a high in 2011 with around 11.6 million units. The advent of smartphones, however, indicated that this market will soon decline significantly and hence Fujifilm took a decision to focus on mirrorless cameras and within mirrorless cameras, to use the APS-C format.
