He breathes fashion, speaks fashion and lives fashion.
He breathes fashion, speaks fashion and lives fashion. Yes, We’re talking about none other than Bollywood’s most beloved costume designer, Manish Malhotra. He started his career as a model, but his love for sketching, and his passion for cinema took him towards costume styling. He launched his own label recently, in addition to being the man responsible for introducing couture styling in Bollywood. His designs tell stories in a language like none other. He recently spoke about one of his upcoming online fashion designing courses, “Learn with Manish Malhotra”, and during the course of the interview, he opened up about the beginnings of his career, and about how he copes with the daily changes in the fashion industry.” Here are some excerpts from the interview:
Your online course ‘Learn With Manish Malhotra’ is starting very soon. Will you be sharing all your experiences and tips or are you keeping some of your important tips to yourself?
I am willing to share everything. According to me, in this field, craft changes, and so your way of looking at things should also change. I am a learner. I will always be a learner. I am always nervous backstage before every fashion show. I never take my work for granted. So I get up early to cope with all that work. The biggest thing is to focus. There is so much out there for everyone; there is social media, and on the internet everything is available. This is the time to discover yourself and stick to what you are meant to do.
What does the word “Bridal” mean to you? Does it excite you, or do you think “Oh my God! I’ve got to dress another one?
I like opulence, I like grandeur. I like all of it, but I think the bride today is changing. She knows exactly which designer she wants to go to for each event. Earlier brides used to come with their mother, their in-laws and their families but today, a bride’s family tend to sit quietly because she knows what she wants, from the boy she is marrying to the outfit she wants to wear..
Today’s brides are more experimental. One day she might want to go for a traditional outfit, and another day she might want to wear something which is contemporary. They get inspired by actors on the red carpet and get the idea of styling clothing.
How did your parents react to your decision to become a fashion designer?
