Reeling from disappointment, Claire Rowley sets off for the Swiss mountains on a sturdy pair of tyres – and freewheels her way back to feeling in control

A thousand meters above sea level in the Swiss Alps of Gstaad, Switzerland, I’m cycling through the snow on a fat bike. I’m not being rude – fat biking is the craze where you ride a mountain bike fitted with fat tyres. My cheeks are flushed from the crisp winter air and it’s like I’m flying. Only 48 hours earlier, I felt stuck after failing to get a promotion at work, which left me wondering what was next for me. Now I’m up a mountain feeling free, relaxed and positive. Fat bike riding is the alternative sporting activity for those who love being active in the mountains, but hate skiing.
