IN THE 1930S, migrants blew into California from Oklahoma off the tail end of dusty gales. This link was further galvanized by John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. The book lands high on Bliss Books and Bindery co-owner Roger Mullins’ list because his mother and father were a pair of Oklahoma-California transplants, and the correlation between the real-life struggles of his parents and the books captivated him.
“We read certain works because of how they resonate with aspects of our own lives,” says Mullins, who owns the Stillwater store alongside his wife Pat. “Maybe you see troubling questions that you have yourself reflected on in those works. If they don’t give you answers, at least they reassure you that you’re not alone in this journey.”
