For some mums, waiting nine months to meet their newborn baby feels like an eternity. So, imagine the plight of Nicole Hocking, a 47-year-old from Brisbane, who was forced to wait 10 years for the magical moment of meeting her little boy, Ethan.

Nicole and her husband Leigh, 46, first started trying for a baby in 2006 when he was 32 and she was 33.

“After about a year and a half of nothing happening, we decided to visit a fertility specialist,” Nicole tells New Idea. “We had tests and we found out we could never have a baby naturally. It was impossible.”

Nicole was diagnosed with endometriosis, while Leigh had issues with his sperm.

“We decided to try despite the odds stacked against us. It took us two years to save up for IVF, and we began in 2010. In the first two cycles, nothing happened. But on the third cycle I got a positive pregnancy result,” explains Nicole, sadly.

Tragically, the pregnancy ended in miscarriage.
