K Prakash Shetty, Chairman of the MRG Group and his son, Gaurav Shetty, the Managing Director of the conglomerate, are scripting new chapters in hospitality and real estate.
The tastefully appointed corporate headquarters of the MRG Group in picturesque Hebbal, Bengaluru, offer the perfect respite after the somewhat enervating ride from the airport. Done up in classic tones of brown, beige and cream, the MRG head office lies adjacent to the Courtyard by Marriott Hebbal, one of the key hotels owned by the MRG Group.
As we enter the cabin of the Chairman, K Prakash Shetty, it is the large water body (of the adjoining Lumbini Gardens) and lush green landscape that set the tone for the conversation to follow. We are soon joined by his son, Gaurav Shetty. The scion of the MRG Group, Gaurav Shetty joined the family business after completing his Bachelor’s in Hotel Management from the Swiss Hotel Management School, Switzerland. Currently, the Managing Director of the Group, he has followed in his father’s footsteps to reinvent the brand and to expand the business beyond the State of Karnataka.
Millionaireasia India talks to the father-son duo about their conglomerate of hospitality and real estate businesses. It is a wonderful time to have this conversation because K Prakash Shetty is celebrating his silver anniversary as an entrepreneur.
Congratulations on completing 25 years in the industry. What do you remember the most when you look back at your journey till date?
K Prakash Shetty: My journey started in 1993 when I took a public bus from Mangalore to Bangalore. I started a restaurant called Banjara – something that I am still known for. In the 25 years that we have been in the business, we have completed eight hotels and several restaurants. The year 2018 marks our silver jubilee and I am happy to say that I have launched two global leading brands - Courtyard by Marriott Hebbal, Bengaluru, and DoubleTree by Hilton Panaji in Goa.
