I THINK IT’S FAIR TO SAY that 2020 hasn’t panned out how most of us expected it to. Life has a habit of doing that – throwing things our way that are unexpected.
We have to accept that there are some things over which we simply have no control. COVID-19 being a case in point. For many people, this experience has highlighted the importance of putting arrangements in place, just in case the worst happens.
I’ve written about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) before and make no apology for highlighting their importance again.
A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to choose someone, or more than one person, to make decisions on your behalf. They are incredibly useful if you lose mental capacity and are unable to look after matters yourself.
The term ‘mental capacity’ describes a person’s ability to make decisions; a person’s mental capacity might be affected if they suffer an illness, injury or as a result of getting older. LPAs can also be very useful for people who still have capacity but are unable to manage matters easily, often due to them being housebound.
