Her first role, that of a Muslim woman forced to relocate from Bangladesh to Pakistan, in the period drama Refugee, set the tone for her career. Here was an actor willing to take a risk, certain that it would pay off. Nonchalant if it didn’t. In an early interview from 2000, ahead of the release of Refugee, she said, “I am glad they are giving me star status because I know I will be able to live up to it. I am very sure of my performance. Even if the film is a failure and doesn’t do well, I am ready for it.”
