DESDE LOS INICIOS DEL CINE hemos visto bebiendo a miles de protagonistas en escena. Desde 1916, cuando Charlie Chaplin se tambaleó en la obra maestra One A.M., el alcohol (y sus efectos secundarios) brillan en la pantalla grande. Más que un simple prop, existen bebidas convertidas en personajes por sí mismas, o por lo menos, resultan tan emblemáticas como los filmes clásicos. De hecho, cierta investigación de la Universidad de Dartmouth encontró que el 80% de las películas presentan algún tipo de consumo de alcohol. En su aparición, las sustancias pueden ser una puerta de entrada a la autodestrucción y la tragedia, o al estímulo y la comedia, además de ser una oportunidad estupenda de product placement. Cualquiera que sea el caso, una revisión del séptimo arte refuerza la relación inherente entre alcohol y nuestra especie.
