Spotlight On Cluny Court
EL Singapore|September 2020
Cluny Court is an architectural gem that has stood the test of time, in recent years hosting a wide range of budding brands and inspiring individuals. In this first instalment of tenant talks, we catch up with fashion partners and pioneers Markus Schermann and Kian Karimian of Alfie Browns.
Spotlight On Cluny Court

Tell us about yourself! Where are you from?

Markus: I’m from Salzburg, Austria – known as the birth town of Mozart and The Sound of Music. And yes, the city really does look like a fairy tale!

Kian: I’m originally from Germany, but my work for Giorgio Armani brought me to Austria where I met Markus. In 2008, we came across the fantastic opportunity to purchase the Italian heritage brand Alfie Browns from its Tuscan founding family. So we became part of their family and Alfie Browns became part of ours.

When did you arrive in Singapore?

K: We both came here in 2013 to launch the brand in Asia. We love it! Singapore is a fantastic hub that we enjoy spending time in. It’s also been our portal to so many new countries and cultures. Our favourite destination is Western Australia, which is only a five hour flight from Singapore. We loved it so much that we decided to open up a store at the State Buildings, a historical landmark in the centre of Perth’s CBD. Japan is next on our bucket list, and we’re constantly following Expat Living for travel tips on what to add next!

How would you describe your personal style and shopping habits?

K: We both have a very classic Italian style with an obsession for detail, fine fabrics and great craftsmanship. We always try to support local and smaller brands – these businesses need our help more than ever now!

M: While online shopping is the way to go these days, I personally still prefer the good ol’ shopping spree. I want the whole experience; to not only feel the product, but also discover the passion behind it and the atmosphere of the store.
