Getting Artistic With Coffee

Can coffee be used to create art? Ask Amita Dutta of Gurgaon and she will show you how it can be done. First, Amita glues the paper on to plywood, ensuring there are no creases. next, she gives each painting a coating of diluted coffee powder, which gives the work a certain vintage feel. After tracing the design, she meticulously outlines it using a 3-D liner of any colour or sometimes even ceramic powder dust. She then lets it dry completely before filling in colour, which include coffee and fabric colours. She initially used only coffee as a medium to paint but it was in 2010, at the insistence of friends and family, that she began coupling coffee with other colours.

But that’s not the only amazing thing about Amita. Born on January 7, 1972 in a traditional Old Delhi family, it came as a great shock to the parents when she was diagnosed with profound bilateral hearing loss, thus unable to hear and pick up any speech as a child. Accepting the bitter fact with broken heart, the parents gave her schooling and tried to teach her some basic life skills enabling her to face the life. Envisaging not much in her future, her parents wanted her to settle down as soon as possible. Till then tragically Amita thought she was the only deaf person around.
