We find out what inspired this enterprising Singaporean to start crafting her unique collection of embroidered art and jewellery

WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO CREATE EMBROIDERED JEWELLERY AND HOOPS?

I’ve always been drawn to quirky jewellery and vintage fabrics. A few years ago I needed an accessory to go with an outfit I was planning. I searched through my wardrobe and found many scrap fabrics and vintage beads buttons instead. So I decided to make something out of those. And that’s how it all began. When Inez Designs started in 2007, it was mainly handmade accessories such as bib necklaces, rings and some brooches. A few years ago, I started adding simple embroidery elements into my bibs.

HOW HAS YOUR BACKGROUND IN FASHION HELPED YOUR CURRENT ENTERPRISE?

Things I learnt from my previous stint in the fashion industry, such as basic pattern making skills in constructing a piece of accessory and understanding of fabrics and history of fashion, definitely helped. As does having an inspiration board and sketchbook helps to breakdown ideas. But the rest is basically trial and error.

WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE A SELF- TAUGHT EMBROIDERER. HOW DID YOU PICK UP THIS SKILL?

There is no right or wrong in embroidery. You can follow a pattern based on instructions. I bought patterns online to try out how it went. I was happy with the progress! I Googled a lot and watched YouTuve videos on basic embroidery stitches. And I practised and basically tried to get good at it. I also
