A combination of grace and luxury, this opulent home of the Menons in Gurgaon, designed by Viraj Mahajan, is an epitome of old-world glamour

If a portrait of ‘The Great Gatsby’ is translated into decor, it would illustrate grandeur, decadence and classic architecture. And the Menon residence in Gurgaon does exactly that. Wherever you look, wherever you stand, each area is stunning and vast, crafted along vintage European lines and garbed in gilt and red. Designed by Viraj Mahajan, the grand home of about 12,000 sq ft has glamour splashed across, while being elegant and comfortable.

“When I first saw the space, I was blown away. There were three apartments that had to be combined to create one home. I knew instinctively what look would suit the home – it had to be classic opulence with great furniture and the space had to look homogeneous,” describes Viraj, as he recalls those initial days when he dealt with the challenge of planning the layout of the home that had an unusual structure. Of the three apartments, two were adjacent, while the third was on the opposite side of the lift lobby. Very little structural changes were done, and it was the design of the interiors that created this luxe home. “The idea was to design a home that was plush yet comfortable, with correctly proportioned classic furniture. It had to be lived in and not feel like a show place. Nothing was to be contemporary; they wanted old-world charisma, period,” he elaborates. Since, the owners knew Viraj from before (he had done the decor for their previous house as well), it was easy for them to trust the designer to bring to life their vision.
