Heritage Workspace

The story of Bombay House is quite interesting. The ancient building dates back to 1921 and the plans were conceived by Scottish architect. George Wittet, the designer of the city’s iconic Gateway of India. Originally, the building had four businesses functioning within — textiles, hotels, steel and power. It has been refurbished and redesigned by Ar. Brinda Somaya, the founder of Somaya and Kalappa Consultants.

Heritage Workspace

The new Bombay House is a three-story standalone heritage office with high tech facilities and agile workspaces of the leading Tata group of companies. The space reflects leadership, integrity and ethics of Tata Sons, each floor depicting the chronology of the Tata group – its “Evolution, Reflection and Metamorphosis.”

Architectural Restoration

In order to ensure sensitive restoration of a Grade II heritage structure, it was vital for SNK consultants to understand the type, condition and true nature of the materials, prior to finalising the conservation plan. Mock-ups for all typologies of façade restoration works were carried out prior to execution. Specialised methods that included both dry and wet cleaning, depending upon the requirements, were used for the malad stone façade. The paper poultice method was applied to clean other façade stone details and deep cornices. External lighting added in the façade highlighted the neoclassical elements.

Smart Urban Design Statement

Imagine an abode premeditated for a family of three generations (and a probable fourth in the near future). ‘Never-Apart-ment’ is located in a dense layout of the new development engulfing the city of Hyderabad. The architects of this project Baba Sashank and Vindhya Guduru, the founders of Spaceficition Studio, masterminded the primary outcome of the concept that will be overcoming the drawbacks of a vertical settlement. The sole aim behind this ‘home-sweet-home’ was to keep the social interaction between the family members alive. The form generated is a direct consequence of this, the context and the brief.
