&lsquo;There he was at the door, the very architect who&rsquo;d built this house back in the &rsquo;50s, welcoming us in,&rsquo; recalls designer and ceramicist Jo Springthorpe of the day she and her husband first arrived at what is today their home in Cape Town. &lsquo;At 85 years old, Dennis Elliott wanted to take us on a tour of the house before we moved in &ndash; I was fascinated. I have always wanted a Californian midcentury modern house and what better place than Newlands, with its unmatched views of Table Mountain.&rsquo; However, for Jo, a stylist-turned-potter and cofounder of the swimwear brand Pintuck Resort, the house in its current format would need to adapt to accommodate the needs of her family. Other alterations to the 310-square-meter home included rebuilding the kitchen and establishing an office, which, with its high windows and Oregon pine ceiling, has become Jo&rsquo;s favourite room in the house (&lsquo;It is an oasis of lights,&rsquo; she says).
