What is the biennale? What is art? Who is it for? What does it do? These, and many such questions, were grappled with in the setting up of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. Its co-founder Riyas Komu tells how the Biennale has evolved in its third edition.
As a project, the origin of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) is well known, but as an idea, it was much more nuanced—born of the conviction that India needed a platform to democratize and bring contemporary art into the sphere of daily life.
Since its inception, the Biennale has given critical importance to the act of making. Through the idea of ‘making as thinking’, it creates the possibility of a previously unknown type of engagement in a public space in India—one that facilitates new forms of art, creativity and thinking. This is evident in the large number of people who came in to work for the Biennale, and it is crucial to acknowledge their efforts in making it a success. I salute them.
