One of the last 1914 Wolseley 30/40 HPs in the world won top honours at the fifth edition of the Cartier Concours d’Elegance. DEEPTI UNNI finds out more.
Marking their long association with India and Indian royalty, Cartier ran into a bit of trouble when they held an elephant polo match in 2006 to celebrate the relationship. “So someone told them why go after real elephants when you can have white elephants instead—the cars,” laughs Manvendra Singh, curator of the Cartier Concours d’Elegance since it was first held in 2008. For the 2017 edition, Singh rounded up 73 of the best-preserved cars and 39 motorcycles from around the country. Topping the list among the cars was a 1914 Wolseley 30/40 HP owned and restored by 35-year-old Shrivardhan Kanoria from Kolkata. He spent 18 months—“seven days a week, 10 hours a day”—restoring the car. It had to be done, he says. “You’ll find maybe 100 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts of the same era in the world, but I’m yet to be informed about another piece like this surviving.”

AD’s Art issue would be incomplete without an essay on Peggy Guggenheim, the philanthropist and visionary who was collecting through the war years, and whose home-turned-museum in Venice has one of the most important holdings of modern art in the world.
