PATTERN NOTES

Use size J/10/6mm hook to make child’s hat and size L/11/8mm to make man’s hat.

Do not chain one at the beginning or end of any round in this pattern; this assures an almost invisible seam. No chain one stitches are used in this hat. Do not turn hat for any rounds. Yarn tension is important for the appearance and fit of hat. Adjust yarn tension at end of each round, before tying off yarn.

Every round will begin with leaving 2-inch ends of both colors of yarn, before crocheting the round.

When finished with round, both colors of yarn will be fastened off, leaving 2-inch ends. Adjust tension of stitches with first yarn and tie both of the 2-inch ends of that color together. Do the same thing for the second color. Ends will be woven into the ridges of the inside of hat at end of body section, and then, for the crown, ends will be woven into the ridges of the inside of hat before the last 2 rounds are completed.

Every round is crocheted with two colors. To prevent tangling of yarn, feed yarn from one skein from the back of hat, and feed yarn from the second skein from the front of the hat while crocheting.

After the Foundation round, the Body of hat consists of 10 rounds. Each round consists of 12 sections: 6 sections of 5 stitches of first yarn color, alternating with 6 sections of 5 stitches of second yarn color for 60 stitches and 60 posts per round. The Crown consists of 8 rounds of 12 sections: the first 6 rounds have 6 sections of decreasing amounts of stitches of first yarn color, alternating with 6 sections of decreasing amounts of stitches of second yarn color.

All rounds of pattern will be crocheted around posts of stitches, never in the top of stitches. The stitch count will be the same as the post count for each section in the rounds of the Body. The stitch count will not necessarily be the same as the post count for each section in the rounds of the Crown. All stitches will be made around post(s) of previous round and the yarn that is being carried across the front of the hat. The top of stitches will be inside of hat, the posts will be on the outside of hat.

When Body is completed, look at the front of the seam, adjust tension if needed by retying ends in the inside of hat. Weave in all ends of rounds, into the same color of yarn, in the stitch ridges inside of hat. Proceed to Crown directions.

For Crown: Important for Fit. Do not pull the top of any stitches tight. Some top threads of stitches will appear elongated; these will be inside of hat and will not show outside of hat.

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

When finished with the Band of hat and all ends are secured and woven in, put hat over both of your hands. Slightly stretch hat while rotating sideways around your hands. This adjusts the tension of the carried yarn in the rounds, blocks hat, and makes for a nice appearance.
