I had a rough week, lost some hard cash from my wallet for no reason and broke my phone’s display as it slid from my pocket. These multiple sources led to my Saturday morning starting with a sense of exasperation.
As I walked through the street, I felt a part of my shoe’s sole hanging down loose from the main body. To my shock I realised that I had a broken sole. I muttered in disbelief, “What is wrong with this day! Why me?”
Dragging my foot, I somehow managed to make it to the boot maker’s small shop along the pavement. I uttered in a sense of irritation, wanting to get it done the next minute, “Look at this! Can you repair this?” The cobbler analysed the shoe and at once nodded with a sense of victory. However, he replied in a very helpful tone, “Babuji (Sir) this sole would not last if I stick it with glue, I will have to stitch the entire sole and it will not take more than ten minutes.” Leaving me with no option left, I gave him an affirmation answer with my eyes and questioned him about the charge. He replied Rs. 35 and I nodded.
The cobbler was a 60-year-old man wearing a white set of clothes and a turban. He was talking in Bihari (a language of a state in India) with some people of his native state (at least this is what I presumed).
