Trick Your Body To Loose Weight

What if someone told you your body doesn’t want you to lose weight? What if they told you that when you do lose weight, your body will try its hardest to get back to where it started and will then throw in a couple of extra kilos for good measure?

Nick Fuller, one of Australia’s leading researchers into obesity and author of the new book Interval Weight Loss believes your body does just that.

Fuller explains that the body is tuned to a set weight or set point which it wants to hold onto and even defend. When you lose weight, your body will do its best to get back to its set point, which is why people often go back to the same weight, or even heavier, once they return to normal eating.

Why does this happen?

When your body is deprived of its usual kilojoule intake through dieting, a number of metabolic processes occur. The first is a reduction in the amount of energy your body burns at rest. This decrease in metabolism is known as adaptive thermogenesis and is your body’s way of surviving when it feels threatened with starvation. In attempting to survive this perceived famine, your body responds by storing, rather than off-loading weight.

“The result is our body stops working efficiently to ensure our weight goes back to the set point,” Fuller says.
