Preventive Measures Are Your Best Defense
THE GLOBAL OUTBREAK of a respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus has reached pandemic proportions, according to the World Health Organization. The novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) was first detected in China and is now detected in more than 100 locations internationally, including the United States.

Public health efforts at the time of publication were focused on containing the spread and mitigating the impact of this virus. The Florida Department of Health is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monitor the outbreak of COVID-19 and is actively working to ensure that the most up-to-date CDC guidance is quickly and accurately disseminated to communities. The Florida Department of Health is urging residents to stay informed on how to protect themselves and their communities from COVID-19.

According to the CDC, reported illnesses for confirmed COVID-19 have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death. The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure:

• Fever

• Cough

• Shortness of breath
