Building a Healther Polk Initiative Targets Obesity
OBESITY IS BECOMING one of the nation’s greatest public health threats.
JOY JACKSON

Obesity is caused by consuming more energy from foods and beverages than the body uses for healthy function, growth, and physical activity. This excess consumption can lead to extra weight gain over time. The problem with obesity is that it is linked to many chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and strokes.

Currently in Polk County, almost 70% of adults and nearly 40% of sixth-grade students are either overweight or obese. Chronic diseases are major causes of death and preventable hospital stays for the residents of Polk. Obesity is also a contributing risk factor to these chronic diseases.
